When you think about butterflies, the first thing you might picture is their delicate flights. But each butterfly starts as an often less-noticed form: a caterpillar! After hatching from an egg, the larval stage of these insects are eating machines. Caterpillars eat and store up energy for their metamorphosis which takes place inside a chrysalis. After they emerge, they are winged adults.
