Matthews Fire & EMS responded to reports of a fire at the Duke Energy substation located on E. John Street at 7:34 am..
Crews arrived on the scene to a large fire in a mobile transformer. The fire was declared under control at approximately 10:30 am.
The fire was contained within the mobile structure and did not reach the main substation. No personnel were on-site and there were no injuries. Duke Energy is investigating the cause of the fire.
Crews from the Charlotte Fire Department also responded with the Hazmat Response Unit and Foam Unit due to the mineral oil burning within the transformer.
More than 11,000 Duke Energy customers were without power. Service has been since restored.
E. John Street between 485 and Stallings Road was closed this morning but has since reopened.
Units from Charlotte Fire Department, Stallings Fire Department, Bakers Volunteer Fire Department, Wesley Chapel Fire Department, Waxhaw Fire Department, Unionville Volunteer Fire Department, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Emergency Management, and the Matthews Fire & EMS Fire Corps assisted at this incident. Officers from the Matthews Police Department and Matthews Public Works assisted with traffic control.
