Town of Mint Hill issued the following announcement on Feb. 8.

In my last post, I shared the definition of empathy, the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. This week, I ask you to consider what empathy means to you. We've all heard some version of the principle, "Be kind because you don’t know what battles someone else is fighting". I would challenge you even further to consider this quote from philosopher Henry David Thoreau, "Could a greater miracle take place than for us to look through each other's eyes for an instant?"

To me, empathy is seeking an opportunity to do just that. I strive to view others with an open heart and mind because only then can I understand their experiences and perspectives. However, true empathy takes it a step further. When you understand someone's challenges, you then feel compelled to take action. Empathy takes a personal investment in neighbors, engages with a colleague you don't know as well, volunteers for a cause where there is a need. That demonstration of empathy is what will continue to strengthen our community.

Over the next several months, much of Veterans Park will be under construction. The park will remain open during this time, but several areas will be closed to the public. The grass soccer fields will be replaced with synthetic turf and upgraded, and additional lighting will be added. These changes will increase the usability of the fields. In addition, reconstruction of the tennis courts to fix the ongoing drainage issues and the replacement of the outdated toddler play area. We ask for your patience during construction.

Let's commit to find the chance to look through the eyes of another this week.
