Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools issued the following announcement on Jan. 17.
CMS schools will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 18, due to dangerous road conditions in parts of Mecklenburg County. A make-up day is scheduled for Feb. 21. The end-of-course and end-of-grade testing make-up day will be announced later and communicated with students and families.
We consulted with law enforcement and transportation officials today about road conditions across Mecklenburg County. While temperatures have risen above freezing, many roads, especially secondary roads, remain covered in snow and ice, and remain dangerous in many parts of our community.
The superintendent has the ability to waive days, but the district must build in the required instructional time for students. This year, we used that extra time for other flexibility, such as adding a teacher workday and three early release days for students.
Teachers and staff will have a designated workday on Tuesday, Jan. 18, in accordance with the updated severe weather guidelines issued by CMS. The CMS 2021-2022 Academic Calendar will be revised to reflect changes.
Closed schools include all Charlotte virtual academies. CMS virtual school teachers will be participating in a staff workday.
All athletics, school-sponsored extra-curricular activities, ASEP and community use of schools are also canceled.
