Board welcomes new student advisor, amends electoral district map

Announcement

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools issued the following announcement on Jan. 11.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education welcomed 2022 Student Advisor Juan Torres Muñoz at its first meeting of the year. Juan, a junior at East Mecklenburg High School, was elected in a student vote in December.

"We are glad to have you as our student advisor and we look forward to working with, and learning from, you," said Board Chair Elyse Dashew. "The student viewpoint is extremely important as we make educational decisions. Thank you for choosing to be a part of this process."

The student advisor is not a voting member of the Board of Education but is expected to advocate for students and offer the student perspective on Board issues and decisions. The Board created the student-advisor position in 2016. A student is elected annually to serve a calendar year on the Board.

"I want to make it better, so that everyone feels like they have a voice," Juan said after being elected.

In other business, the Board voted to amend its previously adopted Board Electoral District Map by changing one precinct (Precinct 2) that was a part of District 5 in the map approved on November 9, 2021 and moving it into District 4 on the map adopted.
