Governor Recognizes Health Director Harris with State’s Highest Honor

Award

County of Mecklenburg issued the following announcement on Dec. 22.

Ahead of her retirement at the end of this year, Mecklenburg County Public Health Director Gibbie Harris was awarded North Carolina’s highest honor, The Order of the Long Leaf Pine, for her dedication to serving the community through her work in Public Health over the past four decades.

Created in 1963, this honor is given by the governor to individuals who have made significant contributions to the State and their communities for exemplary service and exceptional accomplishments.

For more than 45 years, Harris has supported the Public Health needs of residents in Buncombe, Wake, Caldwell and Mecklenburg counties. She joined Mecklenburg County as health director in 2017 and has spent the past four years leading a department of over 900 professionals in providing access to services ranging from immunizations and STD testing to WIC. Harris has also been instrumental in providing expert oversight to new initiatives designed to improve health outcomes for our most vulnerable residents through programs like “Getting to Zero Mecklenburg” and efforts to improve food access.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Harris worked alongside her colleagues within the County and across the State to keep County residents and staff safe and informed as well as serving as a resource for County leadership, helping navigate the intricacies of the pandemic world.

Congratulations on a well-deserved and hard-earned honor!
