Academic "Rigor" Does Not Have to Mean This is Where Fun Goes to Die on November 9, 2021

Davidson College recently issued the following announcement.

College courses change as we learn more about how students learn. Students in a history course make a documentary film using original research of documents, photos and films. Spanish students might create an elementary school curriculum. Chemistry students might research the health effects of vaping for a scholarly journal. Students learn more by producing useful work, so more professors are assigning projects that have a life beyond the course. Academic rigor used to be defined by how hard it was to get an ‘A.’ More and more it’s defined by how much students learn and retain. Join Philip Jefferson, Davidson’s vice president for academic affairs and dean of the faculty, for a conversation with two faculty members about what “rigor” looks like at Davidson College. Professors Mario Belloni, Physics, and Shireen Campbell, English, will take you inside their classes and show you how they challenge students to stretch and grow in exciting new ways.

No quiz at the end. And you can ask questions!
