A mid-August fuel leak is still being addressed, Mecklenburg County said in a statement update about the environmental mishap.
The Aug. 14 gasoline leak under the Oehler Nature Preserve released approximately 63,000 gallons of fuel was linked to equipment failure, the county said in an Aug. 27 update. Colonial Pipeline repaired the leak on Aug. 19
"Ongoing environmental monitoring and remediation efforts are being conducted under the guidance of the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality," the county said in the update.
The county reported that the Department of Public Health is also assisting with monitoring the progress of remediation.
In a Sept. 3 update from Colonial Pipeline, the company thanked Huntersville Mayor John Aneralla for allowing the company to hear responses to the leak from area agencies and residents.
"Colonial echoes the sentiment, expressed by so many, that the first responders and local officials have done an incredible job, many of them working around the clock, to ensure a safe response," Colonial Pipeline said in its update.
Colonial Pipeline provided samples and test results with private, individual landowners that reside within a 2,000-foot radius of the gasoline leak.
