County of Mecklenburg issued the following announcement on Aug. 28.
As summer temperatures continue to rise during the COVID-19 pandemic, Mecklenburg County, in partnership with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Emergency Management Office (CMEMO) and homeless service providers, is working to ensure that residents remain safe and are able to seek refuge from extreme weather conditions.
The plan will open cooling stations following CDC guidelines to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and will make available County and community partner resources to help beat the heat.
In collaboration with Mecklenburg County, Salvation Army Center of Hope and Roof Above has erected a large tent on its campus at 945 N. College Street to provide shade to anyone seeking respite from the heat utilizing social distancing guidelines, along with misting stations, fans, water fountains and chairs. Roof Above has also extended its Day Center hours to 1 – 4 p.m. during activation of cooling stations. Face coverings are required and are available to those who need it.
Both shelters will continue to utilize social distancing hotels provided by Mecklenburg County to help shelter individuals who are most vulnerable, including individuals over 60 years old with underlying health conditions.
The Department of Social Services (DSS) is providing fans to individuals ages 60 and older, and those ages 18-59, who receive disability income. Individuals are required to show a valid driver's license or State ID providing proof of age and a current Mecklenburg County address when receiving a fan. Limited delivery and supplies are available. Fans are limited to one per household. Please call (980)314-7018 to reserve your fan.
DSS is also working with Crisis Assistance Ministries (CAM) to help seniors and adults with disabilities connect with the Crisis Intervention Program (CIP) for utility and rent assistance.
Curbside rent and utility assistance are available for Mecklenburg County residents at 500-A Spratt St., Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. Payments are made directly to the landlord or utility company. Seniors and adults with disabilities who are unable to go to CAM themselves should contact 704-432-1111 and a DSS social worker will provide assistance.
Mecklenburg County is proud to partner with Charlotte Mecklenburg Housing Partnership (CMHP) and Social Serve to provide utility, rental, mortgage and hotel relief assistance to those who have been impacted by COVID-19. To access the applications for the property managers, hotel managers, tenants and those that are seeking mortgage relief, visit http://www.rampclt.com.
Park and Recreation spray grounds are closed due to CDC guidelines. Double Oaks Family Aquatic Center (2014 Statesville Ave., Charlotte, 704-334-0308) is open Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. – 7 p.m.
Charlotte Mecklenburg Emergency Management Office (CMEMO) will continue to monitor the local forecast.
