Pineville Medicaid providers reported $32,779,668 in billings for Medicine Services and Procedures in 2024, data from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Medicaid Provider Spending database show. Medicaid, a publicly funded health insurance initiative operated by individual states and jointly financed by federal and state governments, offers coverage for low-income people and families, seniors, children, and individuals with disabilities. This makes it a key part of the broader U.S. health care system. More details are available through the Commonwealth Fund.

Since Medicaid is funded by taxpayers, community-level shifts in Medicaid billing levels reflect how public health spending is allocated locally.

The Medicine Services and Procedures category includes types of Medicaid-billed medical care that are grouped by standardized prefixes and numerical ranges in HCPCS and CPT billing codes. This analysis assigns each billing code to one category based on these standards, allowing related services to be grouped for comparison without overlap in statistics or rankings.

Though Medicaid payments saw growth in several service groups, the Medicine Services and Procedures category had the highest total in Pineville for 2024.

Statewide in North Carolina, Medicine Services and Procedures placed third among Medicaid categories for total payments in 2024.

Although these payments were distributed citywide, a small number of ZIP codes accounted for almost all spending in the Medicine Services and Procedures category. In 2024, ZIP code 28134 alone saw $32,779,668 in Medicaid payments for this category, representing 100% of the city’s total.

According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, combined federal and state Medicaid spending hit approximately $871.7 billion in fiscal 2023, making up nearly 18% of total national health expenditures. This is a sharp rise from about $613.5 billion in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic.

This jump represents growth of about 40% over a few years, largely attributed to increased enrollment and utilization during and after the pandemic.

Recent federal budget legislation under the Trump administration included notable proposals affecting Medicaid funding and program structure. For instance, the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” enacted in 2025, is estimated to reduce federal Medicaid spending by more than $1 trillion in the coming decade, introducing elements such as work requirements and higher cost-sharing that may decrease coverage or funding for certain beneficiaries. These adjustments could shift costs onto states and limit federal Medicaid spending growth, although the program will continue to serve millions throughout the country.
